To wash your hands of something = to decide that you will no longer be responsible for someone or something = phủi tay
Ex.: I’ve tried to help them and they won’t listen to me, so I’m washing the hands of the whole mess.
The writing is on the wall = It is clear that something bad will probably happen soon = sắp tiêu rồi, sắp thua rồi, sắp kết thúc rồi.
Ex. 1: I haven’t lost my job yet. But the writing is on the wall: My company just laid off 50 more people today.
Ex. 2 : No one told him he was going to be fired, but he could see the writing on the wall.
On the nose = very accurate = rất chính xác
Ex. 1: Her prediction was right on the nose.
Ex. 2: A: Your mother must be about 60 years old? B: You got it on the nose. She’s 60. But I don’t think she looks like that old.
To add fuel to the fire = To make a problem or an argument worse = Châm dầu vào lửa
Ex.: Don’t shout at children if they’re crying, it just adds fuel to the fire.
With flying colours = To do something easily and with great success = Với kết quả mỹ mãn
Ex.: She passed her exams with flying colours!
