IELTS Vocabulary: Collocations – chủ đề Work/Job (Part 1)

• job security: the state of knowing that one’s job is secure and that one is unlikely to be dismissed or made redundant: là xác suất mà một cá nhân sẽ giữ công việc của mình, khả năng bị sa thải là rất nhỏ; an toàn về công việc

EX: No job can offer guaranteed job security these days.

• be make redundant: to dismiss from job because that job has become unnecessary: bị cho thôi việc

EX: She was made redundant from the company after eight years.

• a steady job/work/income: a job or work that will definitely continue over a long period of time: một công việc/thu nhập/ nghề ổn định trong một thời gian dài

EX: Owning your own home and having a steady job will help when applying for a loan.

• adverse working conditions: inappropriate working conditions: môi trường/điều kiện làm việc không phù hợp

EX: Strong feelings of stress, symptoms of burnout and exhaustion, were found to be associated with almost all adverse working conditions.

• an incentive: something that encourages you to work harder, start a new activity etc → motivation: động lực; sth giúp bạn làm việc chăm chỉ hơn

EX: Bonus payments provide an incentive to work harder.

• cope with the stress: deal with continuous feelings of worry about your work or personal life, that prevent you from relaxing → strain: bị áp lực, căng thẳng kéo dài; cách nói khi bạn/ someone phải liên tục lo lắng về công việc/ cuộc sống

EX: Will she be able to cope with the stress?

• to resign your post/position/office: to officially announce that you have decided to leave your job or an organization: từ chức, xin thôi việc

EX: He resigned from the company in order to take a more challenging job.a

• a blue-collar worker: a worker who does physical work, rather than work in management or administration: người lao động chân tay
• a white-collar worker: a worker who works in management or administration, rather than one who does physical work: người lao động trí óc (nhân viên văn phòng)

EX:- Unemployment among blue-collar workers rose when heavy industry shifted its production focus.
– Virtually every industry has reported layoffs of both white- and blue-collar workers.

• a freelance basis: working independently for different companies rather than being employed by one particular company: làm việc tự do; làm việc cho nhiều công ty khác nhau nhưng không bị giới hạn về môi trường, địa điểm và thời gian làm việc; freelancer: những người làm việc tự do, theo cung cách tự quản

EX: The need for IT consultants on a freelance basis is unstoppable.

• self-employed: working for yourself and not employed by a company: tự mình làm chủ

EX:  People that are self employed will often do contract work for larger companies.
