IELTS Vocabulary: Idioms với giới từ ‘On’ cho kỳ thi IELTS – Part 1

ON
- on account of (something): because of (something): vì cái gì đó
- be on(/off) (the) air: in the process of broadcasting (on radio or television): (chương trình) phát sóng (trên radio/trên TV)
The radio station is on air from 6 a.m.
- on all fours: (people) on hands and knees; (animals) on all four feet: hành động bò bằng cả tay và chân
Shirelle was on all fours, looking for her contact lens.
- on demand: when requested or demanded: something có sẵn theo yêu cầu/khi yêu cầu
They believe that abortion should be available on demand.
- on fire: burning; in flames (not burning as in turning black from staying in the oven too long): (something) đang cháy lớn, lửa lớn
If your home was on fire and you could save only one thing, what would it be?
- on hand: available; in stock: (something/someone) có sẵn/có mặt (để hỗ trợ/để sử dụng); chuẩn bị sẵn
A 1,200-strong military force will be on hand to monitor the ceasefire.
He always kept a supply of firewood on hand for cold nights.
- on the lookout: If you are on the lookout for something, you are watching for it to appear: trông chừng/theo dõi (something/someone)
What kinds of behavior should parents be on the lookout for?
- be on the lookout for sth/sb: to search for something or someone: tìm kiếm
- on the one hand: used to introduce the first side of an argument: trình bày quan điểm 1 trong một cuộc tranh luận
- (but) on the other hand: alternatively (used with “on the one hand” to introduce a contrasting side of an argument): trình bày quan điểm thứ hai (đối nghịch với quan điểm 1) trong một cuộc tranh luận
On the one hand I’d like a job that pays more, but on the other hand I enjoy the work I’m doing at the moment. (Dùng ‘but’ trước on the other hand khi sử dụng cả hai Idioms trong một câu, để thể hiện sự đối nghịch. Xem thêm ví dụ khi sử dụng hai Idioms này trong Writing IELTS)
